Pages of Flavor

Have you heard of a book tasting? Well probably not because it's the first year the vertical team is doing the book tasting. This idea came from Miss Myers. If you were doing the book tasting, go thank Mrs. Tyson and Mrs. Kimball because they gave us the books for different genres.
The teachers (Haertsch, Fenske, Zech, Myers, Striebig, and Moyer) dressed up in aprons and the students received a "menu" of different kinds of book genres on it. Every fifteen minutes the students rotated. When they rotated, the students got to choose out what book they wanted to preview. They then wrote down the title, how they felt about the book, what genre, how the author hooked them, and how they felt about the cover. After that the students then shared how they felt about the book they had. When that was done they switched classes to a different book genre. The genres that the classrooms shared were realistic fiction, graphic novels, historical fiction, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, and informational. After the book tasting, the students were excited because it was a fun experience. The teachers created this idea to introduce students to different genres. Hopefully the teachers will do this book tasting again next year.

A Role Model Student

What makes a great student? A great student needs to be hardworking, kind, caring, respectful, and most importantly, they have to show NHE P.R.I.D.E. This is what Tommy D. is showing everyday. Tommy shows the "P" in P.R.I.D.E. by being positive towards everyone he sees. He shows the "R" by being respectful to the teachers and students. He shows the "I" by being involved in many groups. For example, Tommy is involved in the NHE Robotics Club and School Store. He shows "D" by being determined in his work. And finally he shows the "E" by being empathetic and kind toward his fellow classmates. Tommy has been through a lot in his past, but he is still a smart, involved, and a determined student who always has a smile on his face even when things go wrong. Tommy is excited to work throughout the school year and to make a bunch of new friends.

A Mad Hatter Reward

On December 7, North Hills' PRIDE ticket winners went to York College to watch Alice in Wonderland. Twenty five students were picked from each grade. The students were picked by putting PRIDE tickets in the bins, listed by grade level, located outside of the office. The staff then randomly picked 25 tickets out of each bin. Students left for the play at 9:15 and returned at 11:30. Before they went, everyone was excited. Many people enjoyed the play. Make sure to pay attention to the next drawings because future trips this school year will include York Revolution, Education in the Park, and lunch at Chuck E. Cheese. If you're at North Hills, maybe you will have a chance to go on one of these trips.

A Camp-out at School?
by: Avery, Brezlyn, and Ardelle
At our latest PAWS meeting on December 10, students walked into the gym to find Mrs. Tyson camping out on the left side of the gym. Mrs. Tyson was sitting outside a tent with a fake fire in front of her chair. Something was moving inside the tent and there was occasionally a flash from inside the tent. Once all the students arrived, Coley read our morning message. Afterwards, Cailyn read the Words of Wisdom. Cailyn talked about being a good friend and the importance of being a good friend. Mrs. Beckmyer's class then said our North Hills creed. Once all that was done, Mrs. Zimmerman talked about setting goals and our homeroom reading goals. At the last meeting, each homeroom had set up a total number of books they wanted to read for the year. Mrs. Zimmerman then talked to us about our reward if we reached our goal. For every class that reached their reading goal, a teacher would have to camp-out in the courtyard. Mrs. Tyson has already volunteered to do the camp-out and so did Mrs. Urrunaga, Mrs. Zech, and Mr. Livingston, who were all inside the tent. Also, Mr. Youcheff added up all the homeroom goals together and made a school goal. Our goal as a school is to read 19,905 books. Wow, that's a lot of books! So far, as a school we have read over 2,000 books. Next on the agenda was Academic Excellence Awards. One student from each class is awarded an award for always trying their best and working hard. Lastly, to end our meeting, we played a game. Each class had a bowling pin and a ping pong paddle. The bowling pin stood on the paddle and students would pass the pin and paddle down and back the line. Students really enjoyed the game and had a ton of fun. Also, don't forget, our school progress will be posted next month so make sure to keep reading!

Winter Contest
by: Abbie
On December 20, there will be a door decorating contest. It was optional to participate, but every classroom was able to do it. This door decorating contest is winter themed. The recess assistants and cafeteria staff will pick the top three winning classrooms. Then, those three classrooms will get doughnuts.
Two classrooms that are participating are Mrs. Bohannon's and Mr. Lupold's class. They will be decorating their doors and the custodian, Ms. McCabe's door, that is across from their classrooms. They have planned to decorate all three doors in a Grinch theme. On Mrs. Bohannon's door, they are planning on making the Grinch. Then on Mr. Lupold's door, they are planning on making Whoville. On Ms. McCabe's door, they are planning on making a big tree, the famous Whoville tree.
Many other classes are participating other than these two classrooms. The winners will be picked on December 20th. If your classroom is participating, maybe you might just win.

Trivia, STEM, Challenges, and Galore
by: Avery
Mrs. Tyson, our fantastic North Hills librarian, is an over achiever. As you've probably heard, she is in charge of the Winter Reading Challenge, Tyson Trip Trivia, and STEM. Speaking of, our winter break is coming up fast, and with it brings our winter reading challenge. At the end of each library class, Mrs. Tyson is handing out a winter reading challenge. The winter reading challenge is a challenge where over the winter break you need to read 20 minutes each day to win a prize. The challenge goes on for December 22 until January 2. If you want to win a great surprise, make sure to be reading! Next up on the list is STEM. STEM is one of the four choices for voice and choice each cycle. During STEM, you do activities that have to do with science and engineering. STEM helps students to explore new ideas and it's fun. Next voice and choice cycle, if you're interested in science and engineering, make sure to choose STEM. Lastly, is Tyson Trip Trivia. Tyson Trip Trivia is trivia questions asked about places Mrs. Tyson and her family have visited. Its purpose is to get students to practice researching "beyond the Google" says Mrs. Tyson. There's a new trivia question every new cycle and an announcement for it. About 10 students answer the trivia question each cycle, and the students that answer correctly get a free book from the North Hills library. Make sure to listen to the announcements to find out when the next cycle is.

Reunited with Family
by: Landon and Abbie
On December 18, a fourth grader, Addy's, brother came to school to surprise her. Addy's 20 year old brother, Conner, came home from the Marines the night before. The next day Conner came to school to surprise Addy. Conner was gone for 17 months, so Addy was really happy when she saw him. Conner had written to Addy a few times but then stopped because he was too busy. When Conner was 18 he joined the U.S. Marines, but he knew he wanted to be in the Marines when he was 15. Conner is going to be home for a month before he goes back to the Marines. He does a great thing for our country, and so does every other veteran and active member of the military. If you know someone who is serving our country, make sure to thank them because they do a great thing for us. Thank you veterans for serving our country.

Cookie Crumbs, Christmas Comes
by: Landon and Abbie
On December 20, North Hills is going to have a cookie party. This is a fun celebration we do before we go on winter break. During this party we get 3 cookies and a cup of milk. This event will take place in the cafeteria. Mr. Youcheff and the PTO are in charge of organizing this celebration. They normally get about 2,700 cookies and 55 parent volunteers. The cookies come from very generous donations from parents. This will be the 5th year of doing this party. Enjoy your cookies for those at North Hills!

Holiday Party
by: Lorelei and Ella
December 20th was a special day for the sixth graders in Mrs. Moyer and Mrs. Striebig's classes. The teachers organized a special holiday party for all their students. One of the activities included making small gingerbread houses out of milk cartons and graham crackers. Everyone was so excited to take a break from all the work they had to do and have some Christmas fun! The last activity the class did was Secret Santa. Everyone used five dollars to buy a gift for the person they had on their card. Then everyone received the gift and revealed who their Secret Santa was! Did you participate in any Christmas party? Overall, everyone enjoyed the Holiday Party and can't wait for Christmas!

Winter Concerts
by: Ardelle and Olivia St.
This December, North Hills had their winter music concerts. Our band instructor is Dr. Moyer. We asked him some questions like how do you think the band did this year? He said that he was really proud of them. They all worked really hard to learn new songs. Dr. Moyer's favorite song was Mission to Rock. He loved it because it had a lot of great tunes. Also, the song had a lot of meaning to it. Dr. Moyer said the songs that took the most practice were Holiday Seasoning, Farandole, and Let it Snow.
Mrs. Naimoli is our NHE chorus teacher and she is also our music teacher. Fifth and sixth graders are the only ones who can join chorus, and you must attend all of the sectionals and concerts. Mrs. Naimoli thought that everyone did well. She was so proud of how everything went. Mrs. Naimoli didn't really have a favorite song - she liked them all.
