The One and Only - Matilda!
by: Avery
As you have heard, North Hills is kicking off the new year by starting our One School One Book activity. Our One School One Book activity is where Mrs. Zimmerman, one of North Hills' reading specialists, chooses a book for everyone at North Hills to read. Everyone reads, the students, the teachers, the staff, the bus drivers, you name it. This year Mrs. Zimmerman chose the book Matilda by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. Over the month of January, everyone at North Hills will read Matilda. We started reading on January 2 and will finish reading on January 30. Everyone reads a chapter per night and one over the weekend. There will be a trivia question every morning, asking a simple question about the chapter read the last night. They then randomly pick somebody out of the people that answered and whoever gets picked wins a prize. The students are also encouraged to go home and either read to somebody or get somebody to read to them. Remember, don't forget to read!

Student Spotlight: Willa
by: Ardelle
Today I interviewed Willa. She is a fifth grader and I chose to interview her because I thought she was a responsible student who also turns her work in on time. Willa's favorite part about being at North Hills is the food! She also really loves reading because it keeps her going and learning new words and building up that stamina to get better and become smarter at reading. When I asked Willa what her favorite special was she said what everyone else mostly says - gym. She loves gym because she can learn more activities and learn to become better at things. She also likes it because her friends are there. Willa likes the fact that all her friends are here at North Hills. Willa said that her favorite thing about all the teachers here are they are nice and not mean to anyone. Some things that she likes about the students is they are funny and nice and always there for you when you need them.

Recently I interviewed Jayla. She is a fifth grader on the MAC Team. I chose to interview her because I noticed she has always been a role model and never gives up and keeps trying. Jayla's favorite part about being at NHE is having fun making new friends and meeting all the new teachers. Her favorite subject is reading because she loves to know new stories in general. Jayla's favorite special is gym because you learn more things and you get to move around and have more fun. One thing she likes the most is that you have more choices. Her favorite thing about the students is that they are positive and kind.

Avery was born in 2008 at the York Hospital. Avery started kindergarten in West York and moved to Central in the summer of fourth grade. She has two other siblings and she is the middle child out of the three. She plays soccer and basketball. Her teacher is Mrs. Wertz and her favorite subject is math, but she enjoys reading as well. Avery participates in fifth grade chorus, BLT, and the after school program, School Store. In her free time she likes ice skating, exercising, and watching ASMR videos. Her favorite colors are red and black, her favorite food is salad, and her favorite place is the Outer Banks. I picked Avery as my student spotlight because she is very kind towards everyone. Her favorite thing about this school is meeting new people. Avery is an amazing overall person and she is an outstanding friend/classmate.

There's something for everyone at the Movie Night Bake Sale! Come on down to Movie Night and get water, popcorn, and the best part is ........ You guessed it! The bake sale! Maria, a sixth grader in Mrs. Koplitz's class, came up with the idea then told her friends Mara, Demi, and Caroline. Now, they're selling cupcakes, brownies, Rice Krispie treats, cookies, whoopie pies, caramel popcorn, chocolate-covered pretzels, cake pops, and more for $1 at the North Hills Movie Night! They are keeping a little bit of the money to cover supplies and donating the rest to the American Cancer Society. So stop on down to eat some yummy, homemade stromboli, catch a good movie, and munch on some baked goods. It's going to be a blast!

Martin Luther King Jr.
by: Samaury
Martin Luther King Jr. is the type of guy who would stand up for what he believes! Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested 20 times for protesting and said what he believed was right. He also entered college at the age of 15. Martin Luther King Jr. is famous for his work with the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth name was Michael, not Martin. Martin Luther King Jr. had a loving family, a wife name Coretta Scott King and 4 amazing children. He had two sons named Martin Luther King III and Dexter King and two amazing daughters named Bernice King and Yolanda King. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot when he was standing on his balcony outside of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Martin Luther King Jr. was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:05 on April 4, 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. will be missed. James Earl Ray, the person who shot Martin Luther King Jr., plead guilty to Martin Luther King Jr.'s murder and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Sadly, James Earl Ray died in prison on April 23, 1998 from kidney and liver failure caused by Hepatitis C. To this day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy will always be continued by his children. Martin Luther King Jr.'s biggest accomplishment is his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. In this speech, he told people that it doesn't matter what your skin color is and that black and white people should go to school together. Another accomplishment is his leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. Like Martin Luther King Jr. said, "You have not failed until you quit trying." Martin Luther King Jr. will be missed but we will celebrate his legacy and leadership.

Being Safe at School
by: Avery and Abbie
I'm sure most students like to feel safe at school. Feeling safe at school, and actually being safe are two very important things that Central York School District works on. Four times a year, Central York School District has a safety communications meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together people from our community and to help improve the district. It's important to have the meetings so the committee can talk about safety and how to inform people in the community about what's happening. During the meetings, the administrators, principals, teachers, parents, and community members
that attend talk about ways they could improve the school community.
At the last meeting on January 22, the people that attended talked about ways to make Central York School District the safest environment it can be. They split up into groups and brainstormed ideas on an easel. They also talked about a program, Safe2Say, and how they were going to present it. To end the meeting, everyone gave feedback, questions, and any concerns. Thanks to Central York School District, you can be safe at school every day.

A Heartwarming Surprise
by: Lorelei and Ella
Last week on January 25th, the North Hills Coffee Cart Committee had a huge surprise for Mrs. Beaverson and everyone that works in the cafeteria. As a gift, the Coffee Cart Committee gave her a large sum of money to help kids pay back their lunch account debts. Mrs. Beaverson was very happy and thanked everybody for their kind hearts. The Coffee Cart Committee did something very generous, and maybe you can do something kind too. Like picking up trash around the school or just simply giving somebody a compliment. We hope that this act of kindness will give people the chance to be kind to others.

Geography Club
by: Brezlyn
An amazing, delightful, wondrous club about the studies of the world is the Geography Club! This club specializes in learning about the geography of the world. This includes where lakes are located or where mountains are. There are 11 members in the club and most of the amazing, intelligent members are actually fourth graders. I asked around for opinions of the Geography Club, and a member of the club, Maria, told us what she enjoys most about the club. "I definitely enjoy the Kahoots, and learning about Australia, London, and England." An interesting fact about the Geography Club is that the members of the club get to suggest a topic, of course to be discussed later in the year. Topics are usually about a specific state, continent, or another theme. Right now, the members are learning the 50 states, our lakes, rivers, and mountains. An interesting thing about Geography Club is on January 31 there is a test. The Geography Club is going to take the test, and the best scoring member of the club will be participating in the state championship. The Geography Club is an interesting, educational - but very fun - club, and if you're a student at North Hills Elementary, I recommend you join it next year!

Robotics Club
by: Aditi
Robotics is an after school program at North Hills that takes place from 3:45 to 5:30 in the afternoon. In the entire club, there are two teams, the orange and black. Mrs. Wertz and Mrs. Beckmyer are the coaches of the teams. Mrs. Wertz coaches the black team, and Mrs. Beckmyer coaches the orange team. Right now, I am only able to get information from the black team, so let's begin! The black team describes robotics as awesome and says robotics is "a competition that is very fun and you can learn new things." The team is best at having fun and having good sportsmanship. In robotics, the members code, research, display teamwork, and have fun. They have a robot which they use to complete tasks. They do a lot of things using the robot, but just one they do is pushing objects to certain distances. Here is the important thing they did at their first scrimmage: fling an astronaut. Saturday, January 26th they had their competition. They only had one scrimmage and one competition this season.

See Ya Later, Matilda
by: Avery
At last, our One School One Book has come to an end. We recently finished reading the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. We celebrated finishing the book by watching the movie Matilda on January 29. The movie was just as great as the book. I can't wait until next year, for another amazing book.
