The Newsies Are Back
by: Avery
On March 5, all North Hills students got to watch a sneak peak of a musical play, Newsies. Students from Lebanon High School came to North Hills and performed a few scenes from their play. Mr. Naimoli, the husband of our North Hills' music teacher, works at the high school and brought the cast to perform. Mrs. Naimoli and North Hills dedicated Monday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 5 as Newsies Spirit Day. Students and staff dressed up as the Newsies would. If you want to see the actual play, there are 4 shows in total, on March 14-17 at the Lebanon High School.

40% To Go
by: Avery and Abbie
At our latest PAWS meeting, Friday, March 8, we talked about having a positive attitude and working together. For our greeting, we said good morning and shook the hands of students around us. Kylie read our morning message and Marco read the Words of Wisdom. Mrs. Boyd's class then read the creed. At the meeting, Mr. Livingston explained how a positive attitude can change your day. He also talked about working together with students and peers. Mrs. Zimmerman then announced the new campers attending Camp Read S'more. Mrs. Boyd, Mrs. Naimoli, and Mrs. Spackman are the new campers that will be attending camp. Our school is now 60% finished with our goal. Next on the agenda, Mrs. Tyson announced the Academic Excellence Award winners from each class. Finally, for our activity, we crossed our arms to pass a ball down the line of our classmates. Make sure to keep reading North Hills!

Mrs. Kuehne
by: Lorelei and Ella
Do you know who Mrs. Kuehne is? Well if you don't, just know that she is a wonderful, hard working teacher. You probably know her most as a reading teacher, but she's also a teacher for the Ripples Reporters and does an amazing job. Mrs. Kuehne is a very innovative teacher and always has amazing ideas she shares with everyone. She is dedicated to her work and makes the most of everything she does, especially things for this school. Mrs. Kuehne does so much and has impacted many children during her time at North Hills. If you see Mrs. Kuehne in the halls, don't be shy, say hello!

The Newsies
by: Samaury
Have you ever heard about the Newsies? Well, I have. It's a musical group about how orphans want to be free from the wealthy, controlling newspaper leaders and get more money. It's also about three boys who lead and try to overcome and defeat the people who are taking everything away from them. The Newsies act and perform. They sing and dance their hearts out. They dress with very cool clothes. The Newsies came here to perform for our school. I hope one day we get to see the Newsies again.

Come on Down
by: Avery
As you probably know, once a month North Hills has a school store. It's located in the art hallway and you are able to shop at your lunch recess. There is a $5 limit, unless it's a special holiday or occasion. If you're wondering when the next school store is, just listen to the announcements. We usually announce around the time when we will be hosting one. If you're interested in buying or even just checking out our items, make sure to come on down when the time comes.
Behind the Scenes
At the school store intramural, a group of kids get together from 3:30 to 4:30 and make posters, make announcements, and price items. To price items, we look at a sheet of paper and find the box that has the same name as the one on the paper. Then with a marker, we write the price on the box so when we make sticker labels, we don't have to search the price paper. To make announcements, we use an iPad to write down what we will say over the loudspeaker in the morning leading up to the Thursday of school store. We include the date, new items, and a few other things. Lastly, to make posters, we include all of the details on a piece of paper and hang them around the halls so kids know when we will be holding the event.

Henry Hits the State's Geography Bee
by: Brezlyn
As many children know, Henry has won the geography bee. Even though the geography club has ended due to sports, Henry will be going to the State Geography Bee. Henry is a very smart fellow, and his inspiration comes from a video online, and that's how he became interested in geography. He is also very excited, and so were his parents. His favorite part about the geography club was to memorize the states and capitals and the Kahoots. We can't wait until Henry goes up to play his part in the State Geography Bee, and we wish him the best!

The PSSA is coming up, and it won't be easy!
by: Brezlyn
As many children state, the PSSA is a hard test, which you have several hours to complete. The fourth graders have science, ELA, and math, while fifth and sixth graders have only ELA and math. To help make sure students are ready, many classrooms provide snacks such as Cheez-Its, crackers, pancakes, and more. As the PSSA testing window is coming up, it starts a lot of stress. Many people use strategies to calm themselves, and that usually helps. Some tips to get the best grade is to use the process of elimination. You get rid of the answers that you think are wrong, so you can get the right answers. And don't forget scrap paper! Scrap paper can help you check your answers, so you better get some! Lastly, use the bathroom before you start. You'll want as much time as possible, so you better use it. But as scary as the PSSA sounds, it's not as bad as you think. So keep your head up and start studying!

Career Day - Spirit Day
by: Brezlyn
As Career Day approaches, the school came up with an amazing idea to have kids dress up as what they hope to be when they grow up! Some kids want to be welders, gardeners, nurses, or maybe even mailmen! On Friday, March 22, we will be celebrating and showing our favorite job and telling someone about it! Many people will dress up tomorrow. Marco would like to be a Cardinals baseball player, while Bailey would like to be a teacher. The choices vary, but it's going to be one fun day.

It's Time to Recognize Our Favorite Assistant
by: Abbie
Mrs. Trabert is our Title I assistant. She was born on February 11. Other things Mrs. Trabert does at school are the SPCA Club, Green Team, and Envirothon. We really appreciate her doing these things for our school. Mrs. Trabert grew up with two sisters and one brother. Now she has a husband, two dogs, and two cats. Her two dogs' names are Butch and Edward. Her two cats' names are Maynard and Gilbert. I asked Mrs. Trabert what she does in her free time and she said, "My husband and I like to go to different garden centers and festivals." This couple loves plants. Lastly, Mrs. Trabert's favorite hobbies are to garden, hike in the woods, and anything that includes nature.

Wednesday, March 20 was the first round of the PA Media and Design Competition. This competition took place in the Lincoln Intermediate Unit (LIU). There were a few different categories you could choose to compete in. These categories all had something to do with technology. These categories were 3D design, animation, digital movie, logo and graphic design, programming, and web page design.
There was a lot of preparation that had to go into this competition. First, the students had to choose a category that they wanted to participate in. Depending on the category, there were different standards that had to be met. Next, they had to figure out what they were going to make for the category that they had chosen. Storyboards had to be made for various categories. Then, they had to make their design or video. It will vary from category to category whether they needed to get other people to be in their video. Lastly, they needed to find a way to display their project neatly. Most students made trifold boards to go along with their project.
On the day of the competition, students were coming to school early in order to be at the LIU at 9:00. Once the students got there, they set up their projects. The students could not be in the room when the judges were judging. While the judges were judging, the students did different activities throughout the building. The time the students had while the judges were judging was split into two sections. In the first section all the middle schoolers went to a classroom to learn about how social media can be a big help in the future. The high schoolers on the other hand, started a goose chase. If you don't know what a goose chase is, it is like a scavenger hunt, but you are using your knowledge and things around you to come up with answers or take pictures. Then, in the second session the middle schoolers joined the goose chase while the high schoolers continued on their progress with the goose chase. Finally at 11:30, the judges were done judging and it was time to announce the winners. Anyone who won first place is going on to the state competition in May.
Everyone who participated from Sinking Springs and North Hills placed in the top three! Here are the people from these schools that placed:

Envirothon
by: Aditi
It's that time . . . Envirothon is now in session! The fifth and sixth grade Envirothon members study four topics: wildlife, forestry, aquatics, and invasive species. They study from 3:45 to 4:30 after school. Practices were supposed to start on the 29th of January, but snow days ruined that. Up to now, we have finished our current issue, invasive species (+biodiversity), and we are still in the midst of researching each and every wildlife mammal, bird, amphibian, and reptile on our list. We are about to start aquatics. Starting April 2nd, we will be having Envirothon up to 5:00pm instead for anyone who is able to stay. On April 6th, we have study a study session at Nixon Park. Our competition is on May 1st. Now, let's get a little more detailed. In current issues, we studied some specific invasive species from categories such as plants, aquatic, birds and mammals, and insects. We also learn a bit about biodiversity. In wildlife, we read about the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and we are reseraching and writing the identifying characteristics, habitats and relationships to others, adaptations, and some other miscellaneous information about specified species on our list. In aquatics, we have a hundred pound packet to read about watersheds, streams, lizards and salamanders, and a bunch more stuff. And in forestry, we will be learning some tree vocabulary, identifying trees and leaves, and other things that we just haven't gotten to yet . . . but for now, that's pretty much it about the Envirothon intramural!

Breakfast in the Classroom
by: Aditi
THE ENTIRE SCHOOL HAD BREAKFAST RIGHT IN THEIR CLASSROOMS! How? Thanks to the lunch ladies, everyone at North Hills was able to go through one of the four different lines, picking whatever food they wanted to eat. There was applesauce, gogurt, apple and grape juice, milk, and fudge poptarts. This all happened on March 19th.

Elementary Chorus Festival
by: Kayla
The Elementary Chorus Festival - let's talk about it. This year there are close to 30 students from North Hills attending. The festival is a way for students from different grade levels and the MAC team to sing in harmony. Some songs we are singing are "Why We Sing" (this is the festival theme song of sorts), "Little David Play on Your Harp," "I See the Moon," "Children of Light," and "Going to Boston."
We don't just learn these songs overnight, though. It takes persistence and practice, but it does help when you have Mrs. Naimoli to teach you. She makes the boring stuff fun, but don't get the wrong idea. We're constantly practicing and perfecting the songs.
The day of the festival was a day I like to call "organized chaos" because it was completely going smoothly, but everyone was scrambling and frantic most of the time. If you want a show that is going to be amazing, then I think the Elementary Chorus Festival is definitely a good option.
